eighty-eight with wind and storms building — the Thursday that turns.

This morning opens at 88 with gusts to 37 mph — enough wind to notice before you notice the humidity. Partly sunny now, but that changes after 1pm when showers and thunderstorms push in. Chance of rain is 50% this afternoon, then jumps to 80% tonight with steadier storms until about 11pm. If you're planning anything outdoors, do it before lunch. After that, you're better off inside.

The Taubman Museum is open until 5pm, and today's a good day to spend an hour or two under the roof. Center in the Square closes at 5pm as well — the Science Museum and History Museum are both worth the walk if the sky hasn't opened yet. Mill Mountain Theatre has evening shows at 7:30pm, and the covered walk from the flats keeps you mostly dry. A Few Old Goats Brewing on the main floor opens at 4pm — they're pouring straight through the storms, and the taproom's where you want to be when the wind picks up.

If you catch the morning before the weather shifts, the Roanoke River Greenway is rideable — just keep an eye on the western sky. Mill Mountain's trail to the star is about 20 minutes up, but the gusts make it less pleasant today. Better to save the climb for Friday, when the air clears and the wind drops. Tonight's storms will be loud but brief — they'll move through by 11pm, and tomorrow morning starts with showers that taper off by 8am.

Juneteenth arrives with 82 degrees and mostly sunny skies after the early rain clears. It's a federal holiday, so some downtown venues adjust hours — call ahead if you're planning something specific. By Friday night, temperatures drop to 58 with mostly clear skies and lighter wind. It's the kind of cool-down that makes you remember June doesn't always mean sweat.

At the flats, the courtyard's a wind tunnel this afternoon, but the main-floor brewery stays calm and dry. The patio furniture's been moved inside ahead of the storms, and the taproom's already filling with people who know better than to fight the weather. Pour something cold, find a window seat, and watch the whole system roll through. By tomorrow afternoon, you'll have your city back.
