I A Small City

Roanoke, quietly.

A short introduction to a city most people don't expect to fall for — and then, quietly, do.

Roanoke is the largest city in southwestern Virginia, set in a valley between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains. It is small enough to know on foot in a long afternoon, and large enough to surprise you on the second day, and the third.

The freight rail that built the city still threads through downtown; the brick warehouses it left behind now hold restaurants, breweries, and a Saturday market that has been running, uninterrupted, since 1882. Above all of it sits the world's largest free-standing illuminated star — eighty-eight feet of neon, visible for sixty miles on a clear night.

A weekend is enough to fall for it. A week, more than enough to feel like you live here.

II Eat & Drink

A small, opinionated list.

Fifteen places worth your evenings in Roanoke — ordered by our quiet preference, not by price. Click any one for a note and the phone.
