eighty-eight and waiting for storms — the Monday that splits in two.

The morning starts at 88° and partly sunny — deceptive. National Weather Service says 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am, temperatures falling to 81 by mid-afternoon. This is a day that splits down the middle: dry until lunch, then wet through evening. Quarter to half inch of rain expected tonight. By Tuesday morning it clears — mostly sunny, 81°, northwest wind with gusts to 23 mph. Tonight's low drops to 63°. If you're planning anything outdoors, do it before noon or wait until tomorrow.

The Taubman Museum of Art is open 10am to 5pm, climate-controlled and storm-proof. Current exhibitions include contemporary work in the ground-floor galleries — worth the walk from the flats even if it's starting to sprinkle. History Museum of Western Virginia keeps the same hours, same block. Mill Mountain Theatre's mainstage is dark Mondays, but their box office is open if you want to grab tickets for later in the week. A Few Old Goats Brewing on the main floor opens at 4pm — by then the storms will be rolling through, making it the natural landing spot for the evening.

If you catch the dry window this morning, the Roanoke River Greenway is the move. Head east toward Wiley Drive — flat, paved, shaded in stretches. It's a twenty-minute walk from the flats to the trailhead at Elmwood Park. You'll have two, maybe three hours before the weather turns. Mill Mountain's a gamble today — the ridge catches storms early and you don't want to be up there when lightning starts. Save the summit for Tuesday when it's clear and breezy.

Tomorrow's the payoff: mostly sunny, 81°, that clean northwest wind that dries everything out. The kind of Tuesday that resets the week. Tonight's rain will leave the city scrubbed and cooler by morning — 55° overnight, windows-open weather. If today feels like a waiting game, that's because it is.

At the flats, the courtyard's open but have a backup plan. The patio furniture can handle a quick shower, but if you're settling in with a book, keep an eye on the sky. A Few Old Goats opens at 4pm on the main floor — right when the storms are forecast to peak. The taps will be running, the garage doors will be down, and you'll have a front-row seat to the weather without getting caught in it. Monday night, storm edition.
