ninety and clean — the first Tuesday of September arrives with no ambiguity.

September arrives with 90 degrees and a sky that refuses complications. Northwest wind at 1 to 5 mph, no clouds, no humidity lurking in the margins. Tonight drops to 70 and stays mostly clear — the kind of evening that doesn't ask for a jacket. Tomorrow climbs to 95 with a heat index pushing 101, so today is the easier version of the week ahead.

The Taubman is open 10 to 5, and the air conditioning is the point as much as the art. The Virginia Museum of Transportation runs the same hours — locomotives and rail history, good for an hour indoors before you remember what September feels like. The History Museum of Western Virginia is also open until 5, O. Winston Link's photography upstairs if you want the regional angle. All three are walkable from the flats, all three close at the same time.

The Roanoke River Greenway is five minutes away, but 90 degrees on pavement is a specific choice. Early morning or post-7pm makes more sense — the trail stays flat, stays shaded in patches, and the river doesn't care what the temperature is. Mill Mountain is the same distance vertically as it is horizontally, and that math gets harder when the sun is overhead. Save the star hike for tomorrow morning or wait until the weekend.

Wednesday jumps to 95, so if you're planning anything ambitious outdoors, do it before 10am or after 7pm. The heat index hits 101, which means the greenway becomes a test and Mill Mountain becomes a poor decision. Museums stay open, the brewery stays cold, and the Taubman's rotating exhibits don't require sunscreen.

A Few Old Goats Brewing is on the main floor of the building — same roof, different door, zero commute. The patio is open, the taps are local, and the courtyard picks up shade by 6pm. RND Coffee is a five-minute drive west if you need the morning sorted before anything else. The flats stay cool, the brewery stays close, and September starts without asking permission.
