the rain that won't quit — Friday stays gray, wet, and cool all day.

The rain started overnight and it's not stopping. Showers all day, 100% certainty, cloudy skies locked in through tonight. High of 64°, east wind keeping it cool — the kind of Friday that asks nothing of you except to stay dry and find something good inside. No break coming until late tomorrow, and even then it's more rain with a side of thunderstorms. This is an indoor day.

The Taubman's open noon to 5 today if you want quiet galleries and contemporary work without the crowds. Center in the Square runs until 5 as well — science museum, butterfly garden, planetarium all under one roof, two-minute walk from the flats. Mill Mountain Coffee over on Jefferson is the move for a proper pourover and a dry corner booth. Texas Tavern's counter is full by noon most Fridays, and today's weather won't change that — chili and a cheesy western, steam on the windows, same as it's been since 1930.

If the rain lets up for twenty minutes — it won't, but if — the Roanoke River Greenway from Wasena Park east is rideable, though you'll want fenders and low expectations. Mill Mountain's trail system turns into red mud the second it rains, so skip it. Honestly, this is a day to let the weather win. Read a book. Catch up on email. Watch the rain from somewhere warm.

Tomorrow climbs to 68° but stays wet through the afternoon — showers until 2pm, then a chance of thunderstorms after. By tomorrow night it's a certainty again: storms, more rain, another half-inch possible. Sunday's the first real break, partly sunny and low 70s. Two more days of this before the weekend salvages itself.

At the flats — A Few Old Goats is pouring on the main floor, same building, just walk over. The courtyard's a lost cause today, but the brewery's open and dry. The patio furniture's getting a solid rinse. Sometimes the best plan is no plan — stay in, stay warm, order takeout, let Friday do its thing without you.
