eighty degrees and cloudless — the Wednesday Roanoke's been waiting for.

Eighty degrees. Sunny. North wind at 3 mph. This is the platonic ideal of early June in the Blue Ridge — warm enough to feel like summer, cool enough that the air doesn't cling. Low humidity, cloudless sky, the kind of Wednesday that makes you reconsider your afternoon plans. Tonight drops to 54°, which means open windows and no AC hum. Tomorrow climbs to 86°, so this is the sweet spot before the heat really settles in.

The Taubman's open noon to 5 — the new contemporary gallery on the second floor is worth the visit, and the building stays cool without feeling sterile. Center in the Square runs until 5 as well; the Science Museum's hands-on stuff is better than you'd expect for a city this size. If you're here for dinner and a show, the Showtimers are dark tonight, but the Mill Mountain Theatre has an 8 p.m. curtain — check their site for what's running. A Few Old Goats taps the Honey Cream Ale around 4 p.m., and the main floor fills up by 6.

This is greenway weather. The Roanoke River Greenway runs east from downtown — park near the Wasena Bridge, walk the two-mile loop, and you'll hit river views, train trestles, and enough shade that 80° feels generous. If you want elevation, the Mill Mountain Parkway zigzags up to the star — it's a ten-minute drive, and the overlook at the top frames the whole valley. Go before 6 p.m. and you'll catch the city in full daylight, the ridgeline still sharp against the western sky.

Tomorrow hits 86° with the same sun, so if you've been putting off the outdoor plan, today's the day to move on it. The heat's coming, but it's not here yet. Tonight's breeze will feel like a gift.

At the flats, the courtyard's in full sun until 7, and the patio stays warm enough for a late drink. A Few Old Goats is pouring on the main floor — walk over, grab a table near the windows, and let the day cool down around you. The kind of evening you don't plan for, you just let happen.
