The morning comes in clear and hot — ninety-two by noon, mostly sunny until the smoke drifts in around 2pm. It's a July Friday that rewards early plans. The greenway at 8am, the farmers market before ten, lunch on a shaded patio before the haze settles in. After that, the afternoon belongs to air conditioning and whatever's cold in your hand. There's a slight chance of a shower late in the day, but twenty percent means you probably won't see it. Plan for heat, not rain.
The Taubman's open noon to five if you want marble floors and climate control — the current exhibitions run through August, and Friday afternoons are reliably quiet. Mill Mountain Theatre has a 7:30 curtain tonight, and if you're going, leave the flats by 6:45 to park and settle in. A Few Old Goats taps a new Kölsch this afternoon — light, crisp, exactly what ninety-two degrees calls for. They're open at four on the main floor, windows up, fans going. The O. Winston Link Museum closes at five, but if you get there by three you'll have the gallery mostly to yourself.
The Roanoke River Greenway is walkable until the smoke thickens — six minutes on foot from the front door, then flat and shaded for miles in either direction. Mill Mountain's trail system is better left for tomorrow when the air clears. If you're set on an outdoor dinner, Fortunato's patio on Market opens at five, or Texas Tavern's walk-up window stays open past midnight if the evening cools down and you want chili and a Cheesy Western. The smoke won't last — just a few hours this afternoon, then it clears by nine tonight.
Tomorrow shifts wet. Seventy percent chance of storms starting around 1pm, likely through the evening. Showers taper off by eight at night, but plan indoor contingencies if you're banking on a Saturday afternoon outside. Sunday looks drier — mid-eighties, partly cloudy, no smoke. If you've got a choice between hiking days, Sunday's the call.
At the flats, the courtyard's in full sun until four, then the west side gets shade and stays tolerable through dinner. A Few Old Goats pulls that Kölsch tap at four — come over in your sandals, nothing fancy. The patio furniture's out, the overhead fans are running, and by the time the smoke rolls in you'll already be inside with something cold. We're here all weekend.
