Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is five minutes away by car. We built The West End Flats for traveling professionals, patient families, and anyone who needs a proper place to stay while managing a medical situation — furnished, affordable, with kitchen and laundry so you can maintain some routine while everything else is complex.
Why we exist
Hospitals bring temporary residents: traveling nurses on rotation, patient family members flying in for surgery, specialists managing a case. Hotels are expensive, sterile, and isolating. You're paying $120+ per night for a room with a bed and a desk. For a family of four waiting through a surgery recovery, that's your entire week's budget in rooms.
The West End Flats is different. You get an actual apartment with a kitchen so you're not eating every meal at a restaurant or hospital cafeteria. Living room. Laundry. Space to spread out. At $140/night (or less monthly), you're saving money and actually able to live somewhat normally while being right by the hospital.
For traveling nurses and medical professionals
Carilion runs regular training programs and brings in rotating clinical staff. You're on a three-week rotation, a month-long placement, or a six-month assignment. You need a place that's:
- Close to work: 5-minute drive. Sleep in, commute is nothing.
- Affordable for extended stays: Monthly rate is 20–30% off nightly, so a 30-night stay at $140/night (standard) with 25% discount is $98/night. That's $2,940 for the month. A hotel at the same rate is $4,200+.
- Fully furnished: No lease, no purchase of furniture you'll throw away. Beds, kitchen, living room — ready to move in.
- Actually livable: Full kitchen means you can cook instead of depending on hospital cafeteria or takeout. In-unit laundry so you're not hand-washing uniforms or paying to do laundry twice a week.
- Flexible check-in: Keyless entry, 24/7 self check-in. You're working irregular shifts — arrive when you arrive.
For patient families waiting through recovery
Your parent is having surgery. Your spouse is in the hospital for a week recovery. You're flying to Roanoke, and you need somewhere to stay that's close, affordable, and doesn't add stress.
- Five minutes from the hospital: If something changes, you're at the hospital in five minutes. You're not 20 minutes away wondering if you'll make it in time.
- Kitchen: You can eat food you actually want instead of hospital cafeteria sandwiches and vending machine snacks. Make coffee, meal prep. Helps you keep some routine.
- Space for family: Two or three of you are there — the patient's partner, their parent, a sibling. A hotel room fits one bed. Our one-bedrooms have a living room where someone can sleep on the sofa or we can connect you with local contacts for additional rooms.
- Daily rate is manageable: Standard tier is $140/night. That's reasonable for a week or two. If the recovery extends, monthly discounts kick in.
- Laundry: You're there for a week. Wash your clothes in-unit instead of hand-washing or paying for a laundry service.
For post-surgery recovery or temporary medical situations
You're recovering from surgery and need a place to heal. Hospital discharges are often conditional — you need to be near medical oversight for a few weeks, but you're not hospitalized. An apartment gives you:
- Privacy and quiet: Recover without the stress of a hotel hallway. Your own bedroom, living room, kitchen.
- Ability to prepare proper meals: Post-surgery nutrition matters. You can cook real food instead of relying on takeout.
- Laundry: Wash your own sheets, clothes, towels without asking a front desk.
- Space to have a caregiver stay with you: If you need someone with you during recovery, the apartment has room for them on the sofa or we can connect you with local resources.
The location advantage
Downtown Roanoke has other lodging, but it's mostly expensive hotels aimed at conferences. We're different — apartment buildings, affordable, and we understand the extended-stay use case because we built for it.
The neighborhood is quiet and walkable. There's a grocery store two blocks away (Save-A-Lot), restaurants within walking distance, coffee shops. The Roanoke Greenway is walking distance if you need exercise during recovery. It's not a tourist area, it's a residential neighborhood with what you actually need.
Unit tiers and what they include
Standard: $140/night
One bedroom, one bath. Full kitchen, in-unit laundry, fiber Wi-Fi, living room. Good quality, straightforward finishes. Completely livable for a month. If you're here for medical reasons, the standard tier has everything you need.
Deluxe: $185/night
Same footprint as Standard but with upgraded fixtures, newer appliances, more upscale finishes. If you're staying longer or want more comfort, Deluxe is still reasonable and gets you nicer details.
Premium: $220/night
The nicest tier — newest finishes, premium appliances, designer furniture, most comfortable. For extended stays, this is still cheaper than a hotel and gives you actual comfort while managing a stressful situation.
Pricing for medical situations
- Nightly rate: Standard $140, Deluxe $185, Premium $220. No hidden fees.
- Monthly rate (28+ nights): 20–30% discount. Standard becomes $98–112/night. Deluxe becomes $130–150/night. Premium becomes $154–182/night.
- Pet fee: $75 flat (if applicable). Many people bring service animals — we accommodate.
- Check-in/check-out: Flexible. 3 PM check-in standard, but we work with arrivals. 11 AM check-out, but we're flexible.
Staying longer than a month?
